What is inside a dumpling squishy? Three different builds
What is inside a dumpling squishy depends on which kind you have, and two kinds that look alike in a thumbnail are built quite differently. Going by the product text on the 34 dumpling and bao listings in our shop, there are three builds: an opaque foam bun that sinks and slowly rises back, a clear body with glitter suspended in a gel-like fill, and a clear shell packed with loose beads.
We did not cut any open. Everything below comes from what each listing says, counted and quoted, with the gaps left as gaps.
How our 34 listings sort out
| What the listing says the body is | Listings | Words the listings use for the feel |
|---|---|---|
| Foam, named as foam | 6 | slow-rising, doughy, slowly rebounds |
| Clear body with glitter | 4 | gel-soft, stretchy, glitter “in the gel” |
| Glitter as a chance in a mystery box | 2 | stretchy; slow-rising (the two boxes disagree) |
| Clear shell with beads | 1 | beads shift inside |
| Slow-rising, material not named | 14 | squeezes flat, puffs back slowly |
| Construction not described | 7 | — |
The sample is the 27 products in our dumpling squishy collection plus 7 bun and bao listings from our food range. Two numbers stand out. Only one of the 34 names a specific foam (PU foam), and only one of the glitter listings names a material at all.
Plain foam dumplings: the slow-rising kind
Opaque, pleated buns with painted faces make up most of our range: 20 of the 34 listings, counting the 14 that describe a slow rise without naming the material. The six listings that name the material call it foam, for example the coral pleated bun, the cream bao (“the foam slowly rebounds”) and the butter dumpling, which is the one that says “soft, quiet PU foam”.
What these listings promise is behaviour, not filling: you press the bun flat and it takes its time coming back. Only one listing in the whole set gives a time. The golden dumpling in a steamer basket says it climbs back round “in about three seconds”. None of the others quote a number, so we will not guess one.
If you specifically want no sparkle and no loose fill, the azure dumpling spells it out: “no beads or glitter, just a clean squeezable feel”.
Glitter dumplings: clear body, glitter inside
A glitter dumpling squishy is see-through, and the glitter is the fill you are looking at, not a coating. The listings describe it this way:
- The winking glitter dumpling has a “clear, glitter-flecked body” that feels “gel-soft and stretchy” and “slowly bounces back”.
- The icy ghost bao is translucent with “fine glitter in the gel”.
- The pink glitter bao is “packed with fine glitter” and comes in a tan steamer cup.
- A four-piece listing with ears and a glossy glitter look is the only glitter dumpling that names a material: TPR, about 4.5 × 4.5 cm.
So the honest summary for glitter versions is “clear, soft, stretchy, glitter visible inside”, with TPR the only stated material. Whether each one also rises slowly is where the wording splits. Our 24-colour glitter dumpling mystery box calls its colours slow-rising, while the 14-colour mystery box describes a soft, stretchy squeeze with only “a chance at a glitter dumpling”. We are flagging the difference rather than smoothing it over.
Bead dumplings: clear shell, loose beads
The third build is easy to miss in photos. The bead dumpling is a translucent pleated dumpling whose “clear shell is packed with colorful round beads”, and the listing’s own tagline is “beads shift inside”.
How to tell which kind you are looking at
- Can you see through it? If not, it is probably one of the opaque slow-rising buns; check the listing for “foam” or “slow-rising” to be sure.
- See-through with sparkle means the glitter build. Look for the words “gel” or “stretchy”.
- See-through with round dots means beads.
- “Mini” is about size. Our one mini listing, the rose-pink mini dumpling is “small enough to hide in your fist” and still described as slow rising.
FAQ
What is inside a dumpling squishy?
In our range, one of three things: foam (opaque buns that rise slowly), a clear gel-like fill with glitter in it, or loose beads inside a clear shell. Listings that name a material say PU foam for one foam bun and TPR for one glitter set.
Is a glitter dumpling squishy slow rising?
It depends on the listing. Our winking glitter dumpling says it squishes down and slowly bounces back, one mystery box calls its glitter colours slow-rising, and another describes a stretchy squeeze. Read the specific listing rather than assuming.
Which is the original dumpling squishy, plain or glitter?
The word “original” is usually about which brand’s version is authentic, not about plain versus glitter. We cannot verify brand claims, and none of our listings is sold as a branded original. This page is only about how the plain and glitter kinds are built.
Are mini squishy dumplings built differently?
Not going by our range. Our one mini dumpling listing describes a smaller slow-rising bun, the same behaviour the full-size opaque buns describe.
