Infinity Cube vs Fidget Cube: Which Cube Fidget Is Which

A black infinity folding cube made of eight small hinged blocks, held between a thumb and fingers

An infinity cube folds; a fidget cube has buttons

An infinity cube fidget toy and a fidget cube toy share a shape and nothing else. The infinity cube is a block of small cubes hinged together, and the whole thing is the moving part: you fold it open, flip it and close it again, over and over. A fidget cube is one solid block with a different control set into each face. One gives your hands a single loop; the other gives them a menu.

There is also a third thing people mean by “cube” on a squishy shop: a gel or foam cube you squeeze. We cover that at the end, because it answers a different need.

How an infinity cube fidget toy works

Look at the photo of our Infinity Folding Cube and you can count it: eight small black blocks arranged two by two by two, with small hinge marks where the blocks meet. The listing itself says only that it is a compact black folding cube with linked segments.

The hinges are the whole trick. Each small block is joined to its neighbors along some edges and free along others, so the big cube can split down the middle, open like a book, and fold back into a cube facing a different way. Keep going and it cycles through the same few shapes; the hinges are meant to hold the blocks together the whole time. That endless cycle is where the name comes from.

What this means in the hand:

  • One motion, repeated. There is nothing to choose between. You fold, and it folds.
  • No faces to feel for. Every face looks alike, so it works without looking at it.
  • The whole cube moves. You turn the entire block, not one button on it.

Our Fidget Cubes & Infinity Cubes collection also carries the Hamburger Folding Fidget, which its listing calls a folding fidget cube. The photo shows a rounded burger built from bun, lettuce and patty segments rather than a square block. It belongs to the folding family, but if you want the classic flat-sided infinity cube, the black one is the match.

What a fidget cube toy puts on each face

A fidget cube keeps still and lets your fingers do small, separate things. Our three differ in how many controls they list.

  • The Blue-Gray Busy Fidget Cube lists five press buttons, three side sliders, a silver rolling ball and a joystick on top.
  • The White Pink Fidget Cube lists the same set: pink buttons, three side sliders, a rolling metal ball and a top joystick.
  • The Mint Spin Slide Fidget Cube lists only two: a round rotating dial and a curved recessed slider. It is the plainest of the three.

In practice, a busy cube suits someone whose hands wander from one habit to the next: pressing, then flicking, then rolling. The mint cube suits someone who already knows they spin or slide and wants nothing else in the way.

Side by side: what our five cube listings record

Mint Spin Slide Fidget CubeSix-sided5 x 5 x 5 cm70 gdial, slider$17.99

Three things stand out. All five cost the same. The three six-sided cubes are the same size, since 2 inches is about 5 centimeters. And the two folding cubes give no size, weight or material at all, so if size matters to you, the infinity cube photo, which shows it held in one hand, is the best guide available.

The note: the blue-gray cube’s weight field in our catalog reads 5 g. The mint cube is the same size and records 70 g, and a 5 cm cube with buttons, sliders and a ball cannot weigh 5 g, so we leave that number out rather than repeat it. None of the five listings records a material, and none says how loud it is.

The third cube: ice cube squishies

If you searched “cube” wanting something soft, neither of the above is it. On a squishy shop, a cube is often a gel squishy shaped like an ice cube. Examples in our catalog are the Cyan Ice Cube, a rounded see-through gel cube, the Snowflake Cube, blue gel with white snowflake pieces floating inside, and the jumbo Blush Ice Cube in milky pink. You pinch the gel, it dents, and the dent rounds back.

These have no hinges and no buttons. Pick one if squeezing is the habit; pick a folding or six-sided cube if the habit is pressing, flipping or sliding.

FAQ

Is an infinity fidget toy the same as a fidget cube?

No. An infinity fidget toy (infinity cube) is several small blocks hinged together that you fold endlessly. A fidget cube is one solid block with buttons, switches, a dial or a ball on its faces.

How does an infinity cube work?

Small cubes are joined by hinges on some edges and free on others, so the block splits, opens and refolds into a cube facing another way. Ours is eight black blocks in a two-by-two-by-two arrangement.

How much does an infinity cube cost?

Our Infinity Folding Cube is 17.99 dollars, the same as each of our six-sided fidget cubes.

Which fidget cube toy has the most controls?

Of ours, the Blue-Gray Busy Fidget Cube and the White Pink Fidget Cube each list buttons, three sliders, a rolling ball and a joystick. The Mint Spin Slide cube lists a dial and a slider only.
