Clear squishies lose their see-through look in three different ways, and only one of them is permanent. Some are made to turn milky white when squeezed and clear again at rest. Others collect a haze of dust, lint and fine scuffs on the surface, which you can usually wash off. The third is a yellow tint from light and air slowly changing the material, and that one does not come back.
Why a clear squishy goes cloudy, and whether it comes back
Before you decide a clear squishy is ruined, work out which kind of cloudiness you are looking at.
| What you see | Likely cause | Comes back? |
|---|---|---|
| Turns white while you squeeze, clears again at rest | built into the toy | yes, every time |
| Dull film on the surface, fibres stuck to it | dust, lint, skin oil, fine scratches | mostly, after a gentle clean |
| Even yellow or amber tint through the whole body | light and oxygen changing the material | no |
The first one surprises people because it looks like damage. The Clear Coconut Oil Squishy (17.99 USD) is sold on exactly that effect: its listing says the body turns cloudy white when squeezed and slowly drifts back to clear. If your clear squishy does the same and clears after a minute of rest, nothing is wrong with it.
The second one builds up with ordinary use. Soft, slightly tacky surfaces hold on to whatever touches them. The Coconut Oil Squishy Ball describes its gel as faintly tacky, and a surface like that picks up lint from a pocket or a carpet quickly. On a coloured foam toy you would never notice; on a clear body, every fibre shows.
Why clear squishies turn yellow
Yellowing is a chemical change, not dirt. Light and oxygen together break down the surface of many plastics, a process called photo-oxidation, and it is the main cause of plastics weathering. In some plastics it builds up coloured compounds that show as yellowing and, later, browning (Wikipedia, Photo-oxidation of polymers). A clear toy shows the first hint of yellow long before a coloured one does, because there is no pigment to hide it.
How fast it happens depends on the material. The same source lists silicones among the materials with excellent stability against photo-oxidation, while commodity plastics vary a lot. The trouble is that you usually cannot check. Of the 86 clear-style listings we reviewed on squeezy, 24 have a material line in their details, and only one names a specific plastic: the Clear Ball Skin (12 USD), a hollow milky-clear shell in TPR. Every other material line says something like “soft jelly-like squishy” or “clear moldable gel”. So the safe rule is to treat every clear squishy as light-sensitive.
Crystal, jelly or ice cube: what the name tells you
Across those 86 listings, the style words in the names break down like this:
- Jelly: 52 names
- Clear: 25
- Ice cube: 20
- Crystal: 6
- See-through, transparent or translucent: 7
Some names use two of these words, so the counts overlap. None of them is a material. “Jelly” describes a wobbly, glossy look and feel. “Ice cube” is a shape, usually a rounded cube with a frosty or glassy finish, such as the red Ice Cube (12 USD) that the listing says dents and springs back. “Crystal” is the rarest word, and a crystal squishy is mostly a clear one with something sparkling or floating inside: the Crystal Apple Squishy (12 USD) is a glitter-filled gel apple. A crystal stress ball is the same idea in a round shape.
What these names do tell you is how much a cloudy body will matter. Thirty of the 86 listings describe something inside: snowflakes, glitter, stars, shells, a bow, fruit slices or a small figure. The Snow Globe Ice Cube Squishy (17.99 USD) has snowflakes drifting in clear blue gel, and the Ocean Jelly Cube Stress Ball (17.99 USD) holds tiny shells, starfish and stars. On toys like these, the clear body is a window, and a hazy window hides the whole point of the toy.
Keeping an ice cube squishy or jelly squishy clear
Most of the work is where you keep it:
- Keep it out of direct sun. A windowsill is the worst spot for a clear squishy. Light is what drives yellowing, and a sunny sill gives it the most light. A drawer or a closed box is better than an open shelf by a window.
- Give it its own bag. A small zip bag keeps lint off a tacky surface and stops other toys from scuffing it.
- Handle it with clean, dry hands. Hand cream and snack grease leave a film that looks like cloudiness on a clear body.
- Clean the surface gently when it gets dull. A gentle wash removes lint and film; how much water is safe depends on the toy. How to clean a squishy without wrecking it covers foam and sealed toys, and how to clean a taba squishy covers the silicone ones that should stay out of water.
- Do not try to scrub out yellow. A yellow tint is in the material, not on it. Scrubbing only adds fine scratches, which make the toy look hazier.
If you are choosing between a jelly paw, a mochi paw and a silicone paw, cat paw squishies: jelly, mochi or silicone compares how each one feels and wears.
If a clear squishy arrives cloudy or yellow
First give it the squeeze test. Squeeze it, let go, and wait a minute. If it clears, you have a toy that turns white under pressure, which is normal. If it stays hazy, look at it in daylight to tell surface film from a yellow tint.
If it arrived yellowed or damaged, get in touch within the 30-day window after delivery; squeezy’s returns and refunds page sets out how. A photo taken in daylight, next to something white, makes a yellow tint easy to see.
FAQ
Why do clear squishies get cloudy?
Either because they are designed to turn white when squeezed, because dust, lint and skin oil have built up on the surface, or because light and air have slowly yellowed the material. Only the last one is permanent.
How do I make a cloudy squishy clear again?
If it is surface film or lint, a gentle clean suited to the material usually brings the clarity back. If it clears on its own after you stop squeezing, it never needed fixing. A yellow tint cannot be cleaned out.
What is the clear stuff in squishies?
Most listings describe it only by feel: jelly-like, gel or moldable gel. On squeezy, one clear listing names a plastic (TPR), so for most clear squishies the exact material is not stated.
Is an ice cube squishy the same as a crystal stress ball?
They are the same kind of clear squishy in two shapes. “Ice cube” names a rounded cube, “crystal” usually means clear with glitter or sparkle inside, and a crystal stress ball is the round version.
