Fluffy Squishies Going Bald? Why a Flocked Coat Wears Thin and Grabs Lint

Kawaii Pig Squishy with a fuzzy flocked coat on a white background

Fluffy squishies that turn smooth and shiny in patches are losing their flock: the short fibres glued onto the surface are breaking or coming loose where the toy gets handled most. Lint sticks for a related reason, because a dense layer of tiny upright fibres catches whatever touches it. The fuzz will not grow back, but you can lift lint without pulling out more and slow the wear down.

Why the fuzz wears off in patches

A flocked coat is not fabric. Flocking, as Wikipedia describes the process, means coating a surface with adhesive and then sending finely cut fibres at it, usually through a high-voltage electric field, so they fly onto the glue and stand up on end. Nothing is woven or knotted. Each fibre is held at its base by a thin layer of glue, and that is all that keeps it there.

A squishy is also the least steady base you could glue fibres to. Every squeeze bends and stretches the surface, and the glue layer bends with it. Add fingers rubbing the same spots and a bag lining rubbing the rest, and the fibres at the highest and most handled points go first. On an animal squishy that tends to mean ears, a snout, the top of the head and wherever your thumb lands.

We have not run a wear test on our flocked squishies, so we cannot tell you how many squeezes it takes before a bare patch shows. None of the listings gives a figure either. What we can say is where to look: if one spot has gone shiny, it is the spot you touch most.

Which fluffy squishies can go bald at all

“Fluffy” and “fuzzy” are loose words on a squishy listing, and only one kind of fuzz can be rubbed off. On 30 September 2026 we reread the 20 listings in our Plush Squishy collection and sorted them by what each says about its surface:

What the listing saysListingsCan the fuzz wear off?
Flocked coat, flocked surface or flocked shell12Yes: glued fibres
Textured molded coat or sculpted coat2 (3 Pack Koala, Fuzzy Cow)No loose fibres; the texture is the body
Sewn plush with a fabric pile3 (Boba Plush, Corgi Boba, Soft Narwhal)Pile can flatten or pill, but it is woven in
Fuzzy, fur or matte, method not stated2 (Cocoa Cow 2-pack, Caramel Tan Cow)Unknown from the listing
“Plush” as a word only1 (Soft Cheese)No coat described

Three more flocked listings sit outside that collection: the Jumbo Loaf Cat, the Jumbo Bee Squishy and the Hamster and Cat 2-pack. And sometimes “fluffy” describes the foam, not a coat at all. Our Fluffy Chick is an aerated foam body with nothing on top of it to wear away. We sorted these same toys by feel and size in stuffed animal squishies: sewn plush or flocked foam; this page is only about the coat.

Why lint and hair cling to a flocked coat

Wikipedia lists “slip-or-grip friction” among the practical reasons things get flocked. That grip is exactly what makes the coat feel velvety, and it is also what holds on to a stray thread or a pet hair once it lands between the fibres.

Static helps. When two materials rub or slide against each other, charge can move between them, which is the everyday cause of static cling. A squishy that spends the afternoon rubbing against a fleece hoodie or a pocket lining can come out coated in dust and fluff that was not there in the morning.

Getting lint off without pulling out more fuzz

The tools that lift lint work by sticking to it, and anything sticky enough to grab lint can grab a loose fibre too. So go gently:

  1. Pick off anything you can see by hand first. A long hair comes away with fingertips and no adhesive at all.
  2. Dab, don’t roll. Press a lint roller or a loop of tape onto the coat and lift straight up. Rolling or dragging pulls sideways on fibres that are only glued at one end.
  3. Try the underside first. If the tape comes up with coloured fuzz on it, the coat is losing flock and tape is too strong for it.
  4. Use a soft brush for dust. A clean, soft brush stroked lightly in one direction moves dust out from between the fibres without lifting them.

Keep water for last. None of the 20 listings includes washing instructions, and we cannot see how the glue under the coat takes soaking. If something has been spilled on it, our guide to cleaning flocked and fuzzy taba squishies covers spot-cleaning.

Slowing the bald spots down

  • Squeeze with the pads of your fingers, not your nails. A nail drags across the coat on every press.
  • Change where you grip. If your thumb always lands on the forehead, the forehead will go first.
  • Keep flocked squishies off keyrings and bag straps. Constant rubbing against fabric wears a coat faster than squeezing does.
  • Store it in a closed box or bag, away from fleece blankets and pet beds, so there is less lint to remove later.

If it arrives with a bare patch

A shiny patch after months of squeezing is wear. A flocked squishy that arrives with bald or glue-shiny areas before anyone has squeezed it is something we want to hear about. Take a clear photo and get in touch; our returns and refunds page explains the next steps.

FAQ

What are fluffy squishies made of?

Most are an ordinary squishy body with a flocked coat: short fibres glued onto the surface. A few are sewn plush with a fabric pile, some have a fuzzy texture molded into the body, and a few use “fluffy” to describe soft foam with no coat at all.

Can you make a fluffy taba squishy at home?

Yes. A fluffy taba squishy is a silicone squishy with flock on the outside, and our DIY Squishy Making Kit includes flocking powder alongside the liquid silicone. A home-flocked coat is still fibres held by an adhesive, so it wears the same way.

How do you clean a fluffy squishy with fur?

Lift lint by dabbing with tape rather than rolling, brush dust out gently, and spot-clean only when something has actually been spilled on it. Avoid soaking, because no listing says the coat can take it.

Will the fuzz grow back on a bald fluffy squishy?

No. Flock that has broken or come loose is gone. Gentler handling and storage only slow down the next patch.
