Is a cake squishy foam or silicone? The count
A cake squishy can be slow-rise foam, sticky silicone or even plush, and the shape tells you nothing about which. We went through the 25 cake, cupcake, donut and boba squishy listings in our shop (read 30 September 2026) and sorted them by what each listing says about the material:
| What the listing says | Cake and cupcake | Donut | Boba | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Foam (including PU foam and memory foam) | 5 | 3 | 1 | 9 |
| Silicone | 3 | 1 | 0 | 4 |
| Plush fabric | 0 | 0 | 2 | 2 |
| Only mentions foam beads around the rim | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 |
| Doesn’t say | 3 | 5 | 0 | 8 |
| Total | 11 | 11 | 3 | 25 |
Mixed food packs (a hot dog with a cake, a pizza with a cake) and the donut-shaped finger spinner are left out, since they are not mainly a dessert squishy.
Why the material matters more than the dessert
The three materials squeeze in clearly different ways, and the listings describe them differently too:
- Foam is the classic slow-rise squishy. The listings talk about it sinking under a press and “slowly” puffing or climbing back. Examples: the Taro Cake Squishy in “soft PU foam”, the Slow Rising Bear Squishy Chocolate Cake Roll, and the 4 Pack Donut Squishy in “slow-rise memory foam”.
- Silicone feels heavier and grabs your skin. The Handmade Cake Squishy listing says it squeezes “dense” and feels “heavier and stretchier than foam squishies”. The Sticky Cake Cream Roll Trio says its rolls stretch “like mochi rather than foam” and cling to your fingers.
- Plush is fabric over a soft fill. The Boba Plush listing says the “soft pile folds in” when you squeeze the cup.
If you want the slow sink-and-rise, pick foam. If you want something to stretch and pull, silicone. If it is going on a bed or a shelf more than in a hand, plush.
Cake and cupcake squishies
- Foam (5): the Taro Cake, the bear cake roll, the Slow Rising Cake Squishy shaped like a frosted slice, the Puppy Face Cake (a round ombre cake with a sleepy puppy face) and the Cloud Puff Cupcake 4 Pack. The singles are $17.99 and the cupcake four-pack is $29.99.
- Silicone (3): the Handmade Cake, the cream roll trio ($22.99) and the single Cream Roll Cake Squishy ($17.99), which the listing calls “sticky, grippy silicone”.
- Doesn’t say (3): the cocoa-dusted brownie, the waffle cake duo ($19.99), and the 6 Pack Cupcake Squishy Set ($37.99). All three describe a slow rise, and the cupcake set says the squish is “on the firmer side of soft”, but none names the material.
Donut squishies
Donuts are the least documented group. Only 4 of the 11 name a body material.
- Foam (3): two $12 minis, the chocolate Sprinkle Donut and the Mini Pink Donut (it has a tiny face), plus the memory-foam 4-pack at $29.99.
- Silicone (1): the Realistic Donut Squishy, a glossy chocolate-glazed donut at $17.99.
- Foam beads on the rim only (2): the pink Sprinkle Donut and the lavender Frosted Donut, both $12. Their photos show a ring of small pastel balls around the edge, and the listings call those foam balls or foam beads. What the donut body is made of isn’t stated.
- Doesn’t say (5): the Donut Squishy Stress Ball (about 2.75 inches), the 12-pack of party-favour donuts ($35.99), the mochi donut bracelet 3-pack ($22.99), the bag of 32 donut critters ($17.99) and the jumbo layered donut, which “stretches a little”.
Boba squishies
Two of our three boba squishies are plush: the $12 Boba Plush, a tan cup with dark brown pearl spots, cartoon eyes and pom-pom feet, and the Corgi Boba Squishy Plush ($17.99), a puppy hugging a milk tea cup that the listing says squishes down “like a loaf” and springs back slowly. The third, the Boba Llama Squishy, is jumbo slow-rebound foam with a sweet scent.
None of the three listings mentions gel or liquid pearls inside.
When the listing doesn’t say
Eight listings leave the body material open. You can still get useful answers from what they do say:
- The rise. “Slow-rising” or “slowly puffs back” usually goes with foam, but silicone listings use the same words, so treat it as a hint, not proof.
- Stretch words. “Stretches”, “pulls” or “sticky” in a listing point toward a gummier material than plain foam.
- Size. Only one donut listing gives a size (about 2.75 inches). If size matters, the photos with a hand in them are the next best guide.
- Pack wording. Pack listings describe the set as a whole, so one texture word may not apply to every piece in the bag.
We would rather leave a gap than guess, so the table above counts these as “doesn’t say”.
What about ice cream squishies?
Frozen treats are their own group in our shop, and the popsicle and ice cream squishies post compares those designs one by one. For keeping any of these clean, start with our post on how to clean a squishy.

FAQ
Is a cake squishy foam or silicone?
It can be either. Of the 11 cake and cupcake squishy listings we sell, 5 say foam, 3 say silicone and 3 don’t say. Foam ones sink and slowly rise; silicone ones feel denser, stretch and stick to your fingers a little.
Are boba squishies filled with gel pearls?
Not ours. Two are plush with pearl spots on the outside and one is slow-rise foam. None of the three listings mentions gel or liquid pearls inside.
Is a donut squishy the same as a donut spinner?
No. A donut squishy is squeezed; the pink sprinkle donut spinner is a finger spinner with a centre bearing that you spin, and it doesn’t squish.
Are cupcake squishies slow rising?
Both cupcake listings we carry say they rise back slowly. The Cloud Puff four-pack says it is foam; the six-piece dessert set doesn’t name its material.
