Scented Squishies: How the Scent Gets In and Why No Listing Says How Long It Lasts

Scented Butter Squishy shaped like a stick of butter, a slow-rising foam squishy with a sweet cream scent

Nobody puts a number on it

In our catalog, scented squishies are mostly slow-rise foam toys; the listings that say where the scent sits put it in the foam, and many say it comes out when you squeeze. How long it lasts is the question every buyer asks, and it is the one thing no listing answers. We read all 30 listings in our own catalog that mention scent or smell, and not one gives a time, in hours, weeks or months. Here is what they do say, and how to read it.

Of 1,076 active listings, 30 mention a scent or a smell. Eighteen have “scented” in the product name. Only five fill in the store’s dedicated scent field: Coconut, Banana and Butter, plus two marked Unscented. Everywhere else the scent lives in the description text, usually in one word: “sweet” appears in 16 of the 30.

Where the scent sits in scented squishies

Seven of the scented listings say where the scent is. They put it in the body of the toy, not on the surface:

Two scented listings aren’t foam. A TPR cloud squishy says a sweet scent “drifts up” when you sniff it, and a cloud dough slime squishy says its handmade slime “carries a warm scent”.

None of the 30 says how the fragrance gets into the material, names a fragrance ingredient, or says how strong it is beyond words like “faint” and “light”, which 13 of the 30 use. We have not smelled or timed these toys side by side, so we can’t rank them.

Why the scent comes out when you squeeze

Sixteen of the 30 listings tie the smell to pressing the toy. The Scented Waffle says a sugary scent “drifts up” when you press it. The Butter squishy’s aroma “lifts off as you press”. The Scented Hamburger releases a light scent as it sinks and puffs back.

That fits how slow-rise foam works. It is full of tiny air pockets. Squeeze it and you push that air out, along with whatever scent has built up inside, then it slowly draws fresh air back in as it rises. A scent you can smell is, by definition, leaving the toy. So a scented squishy that gets squeezed all day will give off more scent than one sitting on a shelf, and that is also why it fades.

Why no listing can promise how long a scent lasts

How long a scented squishy stays scented depends on things a seller can’t control: how often it’s squeezed, how warm the room is, whether it lives in an open basket or a zip bag, and how much fragrance went in at the factory. A shop could only give an honest number by timing its own toys, and none of the listings we read claims to have done that.

What you can do:

  • Store it closed. Keeping a scented squishy in a sealed bag or box between uses should slow the loss. This is a common-sense suggestion, not something we have measured.
  • Don’t top it up with perfume or oils. You don’t know what they’ll do to the foam or paint, and our returns policy doesn’t cover damage caused by harsh chemicals.
  • Don’t expect it to come back. Once the scent is gone it’s gone. A squishy that smells of nothing is still the same toy.

What EU toy rules say about fragrance in toys

Scented toys sold in the EU fall under the Toy Safety Directive. According to a summary by the testing company SGS (SGS SafeGuards, 2020), the directive banned 55 allergenic fragrances in toys, allowing only traces of no more than 100 mg/kg where they can’t be avoided, and required 11 others to be named on the toy, a label, the packaging or a leaflet if they are present above 100 mg/kg. Amendments applied from July 5, 2022 extended the banned list to 58 and the must-name list to 71.

Two practical points follow. That label duty sits on the toy and its packaging, not on a web listing, so if fragrance allergies matter in your house, look at the box when it arrives. And if anyone reacts to a scent, stop using the toy. That is a question for a doctor, not for a product page.

If you’d rather have no scent

A few listings say plainly that there’s no scent: the Cheese Squishy and the Crystal Apple Squishy are marked Unscented in the scent field, and the 80-piece mini mochi egg bundle is described as smell-free. For every other listing, no mention of scent is not the same as a promise of none.

A sharp or chemical smell when you first open a squishy is a different question from an added scent. Our guide to checking a squishy for toxic warning signs covers that.

FAQ

How long do scented squishies stay scented?

No listing we read gives a time, and we haven’t timed our own. Expect the scent to be strongest when new and to fade with squeezing, warmth and open-air storage. Keeping it in a closed bag between uses should help.

How do you make a squishy smell better?

Air it out first if it has a new-product smell. We don’t recommend spraying perfume or rubbing oils into foam: you can’t know what they will do to the foam or paint, and damage from harsh chemicals isn’t covered by our returns policy.

Is a scented stress ball the same as a scented squishy?

Usually it’s the same kind of scented squishy toy under a different name. Don’t rely on the name: check the description for “scented foam” or a named scent.

Which scented squishies name their scent?

In our catalog, three fill in the scent field: the Scented Coconut Oil Squishy (Coconut), the Scented Banana Squishy (Banana) and the Scented Butter Squishy (Butter). The rest describe the smell in words, most often “sweet”, “cream” or “bakery”.
