What Is a Taba Squishy? Where the Name Comes From, and What Makes One Look Realistic

Silicone Turtle Squishy, a realistic green-shelled tortoise squeeze toy, on a white background

A taba squishy is a soft, solid silicone squishy, usually moulded into an animal, a paw or a food, that squashes flat and slowly returns to shape. The name itself started as a brand: the top search result for the term is a shop trading as TABASQUISHY®. People now use “taba” for silicone squishies from any maker, and the realistic ones are simply taba squishies whose mould copies a real object in detail.

Where the word taba comes from

When we checked Google results for “what is taba squishy” through DataForSEO on September 30, 2026, the first organic result was tabasquishy.com, whose page title reads “TABASQUISHY® | TabaSquishy”. Its search snippet says the brand has offered soft, squeezable toys “since 2018”. A second site, tabasquishyb2b.com, describes TABASQUISHY® as a brand as well. We could not load either site directly to read more, so those two lines are all we are relying on, and we could not confirm who founded the brand.

What happened next is the familiar path from a brand to a general word. Further down the same results, marketplace listings from other sellers use “taba squishy” for their own silicone toys, and a kit maker sells a “TABA Squishy Creator Kit”. So if you are asking who invented the taba squishy, the honest answer is that the name traces back to a brand, while silicone squeeze toys in general are made by many companies.

What is a taba squishy, according to the people who sell them

Across those search results, sellers describe taba squishies in roughly the same terms: soft silicone, often called food-grade, a slow rebound, and a slightly sticky feel. Several shops also call them handmade. Those are the sellers’ own descriptions, not tests we have seen. Food-grade in particular is a claim to check on the product itself; our post on whether squishies are toxic covers what to look for.

Our own catalogue shows how loosely the word travels. None of the text in our 1,076 active listings uses “taba” at all. It appears in just two product web addresses: a liquid silicone making kit, and a chick whose listing is titled Soft Silicone Chick Squishy. We describe these toys by material, and 22 of our listings call themselves silicone squishies.

If you want the difference between a taba squishy and the tape-bubble craft it is often confused with, our post on nano tape squishies vs silicone squishies covers it. This page sticks to the name and to the realistic kind.

What makes a realistic taba squishy look real

A silicone squishy starts as liquid silicone poured into a mould, or is moulded in a factory. Whatever is in the mould ends up in the toy, which is why a silicone squishy can carry fine surface detail. “Realistic” is mostly a question of how much detail the mould has and how the colour is put on.

Four of our 22 silicone squishy listings use the word realistic, and each one points to a different kind of detail:

ListingPriceDetail the listing points to
Anatomical Heart Squishy$17.99“modeled on a real human heart, veins and all”
Black Gold Dragon Squishy$17.99“detailed scales, wings, and a long curling tail”
Silicone Turtle Squishy$17.99a palm-sized tortoise with a green shell
Realistic Donut Squishy$17.99a glossy chocolate-glazed donut, “realistic enough to fool a coworker”

Two others don’t use the word but lean the same way: the Waffle Heart Squishy with its caramel-brown grid, and the Handmade Cake Squishy, moulded like a slice of toast topped with strawberry.

Reading those together, three things make a silicone squishy look real:

  1. Surface texture from the mould: veins, scales, a waffle grid. These only exist if the mould has them.
  2. Colour laid where the real thing has it: the glaze on the donut, the gold on the dragon, the darker grid on the waffle.
  3. A shape that matches the real object’s proportions: a heart that looks like an organ rather than a Valentine, a turtle rather than a cartoon.

Kawaii taba squishies such as the Kawaii Fox Squishy use the same material but go the other way: rounder, simpler, fewer surface details.

What a realistic taba squishy listing can’t tell you

The word realistic in a title is a claim about looks, and the product photo is the only way to check it. A few other things are worth knowing before you buy one, ours included:

  • Size is rarely stated. Only one of our 22 silicone squishy listings gives a measurement, a sloth lamp listed at 2 inches.
  • Handmade is rarely stated. One of the 22, the Handmade Cake Squishy, uses the word. For the rest, the listing doesn’t say how each piece was made, so we don’t claim it.
  • Price isn’t a reliable signal. Sellers in the search results present taba squishies as a premium product. 21 of our 22 silicone squishies are $17.99 (the three-piece cream roll set is $22.99), the same price as 577 of our 1,076 active listings, most of which are not silicone. A higher price elsewhere may reflect a brand or hand-finishing, but the listing has to say so.

Making your own instead

If you would rather cast a realistic one yourself, the detail question becomes a mould question. A mould with scales or veins cut into it gives you those details for free; a smooth one never will, however carefully you colour the piece. Two of the three squishy making kits we stock use liquid silicone, priced at $21.99 and $29.99. The taba squishy kit guide compares what comes in each box, and how to make a taba squishy at home walks through a first pour.

FAQ

What is a taba squishy?

A taba squishy is a soft, solid silicone squishy, usually shaped like an animal, a paw or a food, that squashes flat and slowly returns to shape. Sellers often describe them as slightly sticky, with a slow rebound.

Who invented the taba squishy?

The name comes from a brand: the top search result for the term is tabasquishy.com, which uses the mark TABASQUISHY® and says it has been offering soft squeeze toys since 2018. We couldn’t confirm who founded it. Silicone squeeze toys in general are made by many companies, and “taba” is now used for them as a general word.

What does taba mean in taba squishy?

It comes from the brand name TABASQUISHY. We found no source that explains what the word taba itself stands for, so we won’t guess; in everyday use it just marks a soft silicone squishy.

What makes a realistic taba squishy different from a cute one?

The material is the same. A realistic taba squishy has a mould with real-world detail, such as veins, scales or a waffle grid, colour placed where the real object has it, and true-to-life proportions. A kawaii one is rounder and simpler.

Are all taba squishies handmade?

No listing we have read proves that. Some sellers call theirs handmade; among our 22 silicone squishy listings, only one uses the word. If handmade matters to you, look for it stated in the listing itself.
