Three different toys answer to “stuffed animal squishy”
Search for a stuffed animal squishy and you get three different toys under one name. One is a sewn plush: fabric outside, soft filling inside. The second is a flocked squishy: a moulded squeeze toy with a short fuzzy coat that makes it look like a stuffed animal. The third has no fabric at all, just a pillow-soft foam body and a cosy name. They look alike in thumbnails and feel nothing alike in your hand.
There is also a fourth thing many people mean: the big, round, hug-size stuffed animals sold under brand names such as Squishmallows. Those are sewn plush toys made for cuddling, and we don’t sell that kind. If that is what you are after, the rest of this page will at least help you avoid buying a palm-sized squeeze toy by mistake.
How we sorted 25 plush and pillow squishies
On 30 September 2026 we read every listing in our Plush Squishy collection (20 listings) and our Pillow Squishy collection (5 listings) and put each one in a group by what the listing and its photo show about the outside and the inside.
| What it is | How to spot it | Listings | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sewn plush | Woven fabric with a pile you can see in the photo; the listing says plush, soft pile or stuffed | 3 | Boba Plush $12, Corgi Boba Squishy Plush $17.99, Soft Narwhal Squishy Plush $17.99 |
| Flocked squishy | The listing says flocked or velvety: a moulded body with a thin fibre coat | 12 | Tabby Cat Mochi Squishy, Kawaii Pig Squishy, Jumbo Elephant Squishy, all $17.99 |
| Fuzzy look, method not stated | Fuzzy, fluffy or fur in the text, but no mention of flocking; two call it a sculpted or moulded coat | 4 | Fuzzy Cow Squishy $17.99, 3 Pack Koala Squishy $22.99 |
| “Plush” as a word only | Called plush, with no fabric or coat described | 1 | Soft Cheese Squishy, sold as a “marshmallow-plush” block, $17.99 |
| Pillow-soft, no fabric | Pillowy, marshmallow-soft; a bare squishy body | 5 | Soft Apple Squishy, Soft Hot Dog Squishy, $17.99 each |
So only 3 of the 25 are stuffed animals in the sewing-machine sense. Most of what gets called a squishy plush is a squeeze toy wearing a fuzzy coat.
One more pillow that isn’t fabric: the Down Pillow ($12) is a tiny white quilted cushion, but its listing describes soft milky foam, and in the photo a thumb presses straight into the quilted squares. The pillow is the shape, not the material.
What each kind does when you squeeze it
Sewn plush. You are squeezing a filling through fabric, so the first thing that moves is the cloth. The Boba Plush listing puts it well: squeeze the cup and “the soft pile folds in”. The Soft Narwhal’s filling is described as springy foam that recovers the moment you release it, a quick return, yet a later line in the same listing talks about a slow rebound. When a listing says both, expect the fast one and treat any slowness as a bonus.
Flocked and fuzzy squishies. Under the coat is an ordinary squishy body, and the coat changes the touch, not the squeeze. All 16 listings in these two groups describe a slow return, in words such as “sinks slowly under your thumb before puffing back into shape” (Tabby Cat) or “rises back at its own lazy pace” (Fuzzy Cow). That slow sink and rise is the thing a sewn plush will not do. If you want to watch a dent fill back in, this is the group to pick, and the coat adds a velvety feel on top.
Pillow-soft squishies. No coat, so you feel the squishy surface directly. All five pillow listings describe a slow rise, and the Soft Hot Dog names slow-rising foam. These are the plainest choice if the squeeze is all you care about.
Size: none of the 25 listings gives a measurement
Stuffed animals are usually sold by height. None of these 25 listings gives a measurement in centimetres or inches. What they give instead are size words: palm-sized, pocket-sized, mini, jumbo, oversized. Only a few point at anything bigger than a hand:
- The Jumbo Cat Squishy With Pearls says it is large enough to hug.
- The Jumbo Elephant says it runs heavier and chunkier than the mini squishies.
- The Soft Apple is described as big enough to squeeze with two hands.
Even the Corgi Boba, which looks like a classic round stuffed animal in its photo, is listed as palm-sized. If you are buying something to sleep with or to sit on a bed, check the size word before the picture, and if a size matters, ask us before ordering.
Cleaning: the listings don’t tell you
None of the 25 listings includes washing instructions. That matters more for these than for bare squishies, because both fabric pile and a flocked coat hold on to lint and dust. We would rather not invent a wash routine for a toy whose inside we can’t see; our guide to cleaning a squishy explains what to check first and when to ask the maker instead. The pillow-soft group at least has no coat to catch lint.
Which one to choose
- You want something to cuddle: a sewn plush, but check the size first: none of ours gives a measurement, and the Corgi Boba is listed as palm-sized.
- You want a slow squeeze with a soft feel: a flocked squishy. Most of our plush squishies are this kind.
- You want the squeeze and nothing else: a pillow-soft squishy without a coat.
- You are not sure what a listing is: look for the words flocked, velvety or plush fabric. Fuzzy and fluffy alone don’t tell you how the coat was made.
If you are comparing on softness alone, we broke that down by material in the softest squishies.
FAQ
What are those squishy stuffed animals called?
The big round ones made for hugging are sewn plush toys, and many are sold under brand names such as Squishmallows. The smaller ones sold as a squishy plush or plush squishy toy are usually squeeze toys with a flocked coat, and a few are small sewn plushies.
Is a plush squishy slow rising?
The flocked ones usually are. In our shop, all 16 flocked or fuzzy plush squishies describe a slow return after a squeeze. Sewn plush behaves more like a cushion; our narwhal’s listing says it bounces back as soon as you let go.
Is a stuffed animal squishy always a real stuffed animal?
Only sometimes, and the same goes for anything sold as a squishy plush. Of our 25 plush and pillow squishies, 3 are sewn fabric toys. The rest are squishies with a fuzzy coat or a soft, pillow-like body.
Can you wash a plush squishy?
None of our plush squishy listings gives washing instructions, so we don’t recommend soaking or machine-washing one. Check the packaging, and ask the seller for the exact product’s care guidance before using water.
