Handmade Squishies vs Factory-Made: What 'Handmade' Really Means

Handmade strawberry cake squishy made of silicone, shaped like a slice of toast

Handmade squishies are rare: 11 listings out of 1,076

Handmade squishies are a small corner of the squishy world. When we searched all 1,076 active listings in our shop on September 30, 2026, only 11 used the words handmade, hand-painted or hand-shaped. Six use the word handmade, one of them only for the slime it holds; five say only the painting was done by hand. The other 1,065 listings make no claim about handwork either way.

So “handmade vs factory-made” is not a split down the middle of the shelf. It is a short list of exceptions, and even that list mixes three different claims.

Three different claims under one word

Handicraft is usually defined as making things with your hands and skill rather than machines. Squishy listings stretch the word to cover three quite different jobs:

What the listing saysListings in our shopWhat was actually done by hand
The whole toy is handmade5Shaping or pouring the piece, sometimes filling it
Hand-painted5Colour and small details; the body itself is not called handmade
Handmade filling only1 (the slime squishy)The slime inside or on top, not the toy’s shell

The hand-painted group is the one to read closely. Our hand-painted schnauzer squishy lists its material as soft slow-rise foam and calls the toy hand-painted. The handwork it names is the salt-and-pepper colouring, not the shape. That is real handwork on a body the listing never calls handmade. The realistic dragon fruit squishy says the same thing in other words: lifelike sculpting and hand-painted colour.

The fully handmade group looks different. The handmade strawberry cake squishy is silicone, and its listing says it squeezes denser and heavier than foam. The handmade coconut oil squishy says it was hand-shaped. The handmade coconut squishy set describes itself as “a little chunky”, a refreshingly plain way to admit that handwork shows.

How a molded foam squishy gets its shape

Most squishies on any shelf are polyurethane foam. Industrial foam is made by mixing liquid chemicals that react and expand; the reaction can take anywhere from a few seconds to many minutes, and fast-reacting mixes need machines because a person can’t stir them quickly enough. The mix can be sprayed, poured into open blocks or poured into molds.

A mold is what makes a factory squishy consistent. Every bun from one mold has the same outline, the same holes, the same crust line. Colour gets added afterwards in one way or another, and painting details is a step where a person can still do the work by hand. That is why “hand-painted” and “mass-produced” are not opposites.

What you notice as a buyer: two molded foam squishies from the same listing should look like twins apart from paint. Two handmade ones may not.

Handmade taba squishy: why silicone suits small makers

Silicone is the material that makes handmade squishies practical at a kitchen table. Squishy silicone usually comes as two liquids that cure at room temperature once they are mixed, so a maker can stir a cup, colour it, pour it into a mold and leave it. Our liquid silicone kit with 8 molds says a poured piece is ready after 24 hours.

That slow cure is why a handmade taba squishy tends to come in small numbers: each mold holds one piece until the silicone sets. Hand pouring also leaves room for small differences between two pieces, which can show up as a slightly uneven base or colour swirls that don’t repeat.

One quirk worth knowing if you pour your own: one common type of silicone rubber, the platinum-cured kind, can fail to set when it touches tin, sulfur or some amine compounds. If a batch stays tacky, the mold or a pigment may be the cause rather than your measuring. Our step-by-step guide to making a taba squishy at home covers the pour itself; besides the 8-mold kit we also sell a silicone kit with paw, capybara and bunny molds.

Handmade stress balls: the two in our catalog

Two of the handmade listings are stress balls rather than shaped squishies, and they behave nothing alike.

  • The kiwi slushie squishy ball is moldable. Its listing says it keeps the dent you press into it until you work it back into a ball by hand.
  • The crispy shell squishy ball has a thin crackly shell over a soft core, so the first squeeze crunches and the rest is slow and doughy.

So “handmade stress ball” tells you how the ball was made, not how it feels. Read the feel line in the listing, not the word handmade.

What “handmade” changes for you, and what it doesn’t

It changes consistency. A handmade piece can differ from its photo in small ways: a thicker edge, a colour that sits higher on one side. If that bothers you, a molded squishy is the safer pick. If it charms you, the handmade listings are where to look.

It doesn’t change the price in our shop. All 11 handmade or hand-painted listings cost $17.99, the same as most single squishies we sell, and the coconut set includes two balls for that price.

And it can’t be checked from a photo. Our listings don’t show who made a piece or how long it took, and most listings elsewhere don’t either. Treat handmade as the seller’s description of the process, then judge the toy by what the listing does prove: material, size and the feel it describes.

FAQ

Are handmade squishies better than factory ones?

Not automatically. Handmade squishies vary more from piece to piece, which some buyers like and some don’t. A molded squishy is more predictable. Neither word tells you how soft, dense or slow-rising a squishy is; the feel description does.

Are taba squishies handmade?

Some are. Silicone is easy to pour by hand, which is why home makers and small shops use it, but handmade and silicone are separate claims. In our catalog only one of the five fully handmade listings is silicone; the handmade coconut oil squishy is foam. Look for the word handmade on the listing rather than assuming it from the material.

What is a handmade stress ball?

A stress ball that someone shaped, filled or finished by hand. In our catalog that covers a moldable kiwi ball that holds its dents and a crunchy chocolate-shell ball with a soft core, two very different squeezes.

Is a hand-painted squishy handmade?

Only partly. On our schnauzer and dragon fruit squishies, hand-painted describes the colour and details. Neither listing says the body was made by hand, so read it as a handmade finish, not a handmade toy.
