Glitter Squishies: How the Glitter Stays Inside, and What to Do When It Doesn't

Crystal Apple Squishy, a glossy clear green apple with glitter suspended in the gel

In most glitter squishies the glitter is not glued to anything. It floats in a clear gel, or rides along in a bead or sugar fill, and a stretchy skin keeps all of it in. As long as the skin and its seams stay closed, the glitter stays put. Glitter on your hands means there is a hole somewhere, and at that point the job is containing the mess, not fixing the toy.

Why the glitter stays inside glitter squishies

Glitter itself is just tiny flat flakes. Wikipedia describes modern glitter as small reflective particles, usually cut from sheets of plastic (PET is common) combined with a reflective layer such as aluminium, in sizes from about 0.002 to 0.25 inches a side. It is also, in the same article’s words, prone to sticking to “clothing, skin, and furniture” and “difficult to remove”. Anyone who has done a craft project with a child already knows this.

In a squishy, those flakes are held in place in one of two ways. Either they are mixed into a thick gel, which resists flowing (that resistance is what viscosity measures), so the flakes drift only when you squeeze and then hang where they stop. Or they are mixed into a fill of beads or grains that holds its own shape. Either way, the glitter moves inside the toy, never through the skin.

On 30 September 2026 we read the listings for the glitter squishies in our shop, 102 in all, and sorted them by what each says the glitter sits in:

What the listing says holds the glitterListings
A gel or jelly-like fill (“glitter in the gel”, “glitter shifting through the gel”)47
A bead, sugar or slush fill10
Foam, with glitter as the color or finish4
A clear body, fill not named15
Not described26

Two things stand out. Gel is by far the most common build, and it is the one whose leaks are wet and sticky. And 41 of the 102 listings (the last two rows) do not tell you what is inside at all. Apart from the four foam ones, only 2 of the 102 name what the toy itself is made of, and both say TPR.

Three builds, three ways a leak shows up

Because the glitter is carried by the fill, a leak looks different depending on the fill.

Glitter in gel. This is the Crystal Apple Squishy (“glitter shifting through the gel”, $12), the Jellyfish Squishy (“fine glitter in the gel”, $12) and the Jumbo Lips Squishy (“red and gold glitter in the gel”, $15). A leak here starts as a spot that feels tacky or wet, often along a seam or wherever the skin is thinnest. You may see glitter caught right at the edge of it. Over days the toy gets a little flatter or wrinklier, because gel is leaving and nothing replaces it.

Glitter in a bead or sugar fill. The 2 Pack Shark Squishy Sugar Balls are “stuffed with glitter beads”, and the Mint Green Poop Squishy is filled with “squishy sugar beads” and calls itself “mess-free”. A split in one of these is dry: loose beads and a scatter of glitter, rather than a sticky patch. We explained what those sugar fills are in what “sugar” and “maltose” mean on a squishy label.

Glitter on foam. The Jumbo Owl Squishy lists “purple glitter finish” and “Soft, slow-rise foam”; the Rainbow Llama Squishy is “molded from soft scented memory foam”. There is no liquid or loose fill in these, so there is nothing to leak. What a foam squishy does instead, as it ages, is crack, which we covered in why PU foam cracks with age. None of the four foam listings says whether the glitter finish can rub off, so we won’t claim either way.

Glitter squishy leaking? Contain it first

Once a gel squishy has a hole, every squeeze pushes more gel and glitter out through it. So the order is: stop the spread, then clean, then decide about the toy.

  1. Stop squeezing it. Put it down on a paper towel, or better, in a zip-top bag.
  2. Find the leak. Wipe the skin dry and press gently near the seams. The tacky spot comes back first.
  3. Clean your hands before you touch anything else. Wipe off the gel with a dry paper towel, then wash. Glitter moves from hands to faces, sofas and keyboards faster than you expect.
  4. Lift glitter off fabric with tape or a lint roller rather than rubbing it in.
  5. Bin the gel and wipes rather than rinsing them down the sink. Most glitter is plastic, and Wikipedia notes that it is rarely recycled and can end up in waterways.
  6. Keep the toy, the gel and any loose beads away from small children and pets while you clean up.

Can you fix it? Sometimes, depending on what the skin is made of. A gel squishy is the hardest case, because the gel keeps pushing at the patch from inside. Our guide to which glue fixes a ripped squishy goes through it material by material. If it cannot be sealed, keep the leaking toy in its bag until you throw it out.

If a glitter squishy arrives already leaking, that counts as arriving damaged. Email us within 30 days of delivery with your order number and a photo, and we will arrange a replacement or refund. Damage from heat, cutting or harsh chemicals is not covered. The details are in our refund policy.

Picking a glitter squishy that is less likely to make a mess

  • Want no chance of a leak? Pick a foam squishy with a glitter finish, like the owls and the llama above. You get the sparkle without a liquid fill, at the cost of the see-through look.
  • Want to watch the glitter swirl? That means gel. Keep it away from heat, pockets with keys or pens, and pet teeth, because a puncture is the easiest way to start a leak.
  • Want something in between? A bead or sugar fill still shows glitter through a clear or tinted skin, and if it does split, it spills dry.
  • Can’t tell from the listing? About two in five of our glitter listings don’t say what is inside. Look at the photo for a clear body, and ask us if it matters.

FAQ

What is a glitter squishy?

A glitter squishy is a squeeze toy with glitter sealed inside it, usually in a clear gel or a bead fill, so the sparkle moves when you squeeze. Some foam squishies are also sold as glitter squishies because the glitter is part of their color or finish.

Can glitter leak out of glitter squishies?

Only if the skin or a seam is broken. Glitter can’t pass through an intact skin. A leak usually starts from a puncture or a weak seam, and in a gel squishy it feels tacky before you see glitter.

Is a glitter stress ball the same as a glitter squishy ball?

The names are used for the same kind of toy: a ball you squeeze with glitter inside. What differs is the fill. A gel ball dents and springs back, a bead-filled one shifts and settles, and a foam one sinks and rises slowly. Read the listing for the fill rather than going by the name.

How do you get glitter gel out of a carpet or sofa?

Scoop up as much gel as you can with a paper towel without pressing it deeper, then dab the spot. Lift the loose glitter with tape or a lint roller once the area is dry. Check the fabric’s care label before using any cleaner on it.
